georgetown festival 2018: DUALITY OF RATTAN

Nothing inspires such polarizing emotions in a Malaysian child than that of Rattan. In a way, the rattan is synonymous with the cane - fear of failure, discipline, growth and maturity. Rattan is about the anguish of anticipation as the cane strikes the buttocks, the sharp pain of discipline, and the shame afterwards.

However, the rattan is also about rattan furniture, of hanging seats of joy and fun when one climbs into one during balik kampung visits. Rattan is about freedom, and the lack of care, the joy and fun of childhood.

This installation presents this uniquely Malaysian material in this context: portraying the duality and two facedness of rattan in an engaging and dynamic art installation.
